The special characteristic of these gems is their opalescence, a rainbow-like iridescence which changes with the angle of observation. No two are alike. Opals are in a class by themselves. No other stone has such a rich folklore. (They have been considered both the luckiest and unluckiest gems to own). More than any other gemstone, each opal is distinctly individual. As a gem species, opal is so unique it has its own descriptive vocabulary. Opals are also the most delicate gems commonly worn and require special care. Opal is the Birthstone for October.
